Flickr Search Connector for Windows 7 Search Federation

No comments October 20th, 2009

Flickr Search Connector created by Long Zheng extends Windows 7’s capabilities with combining two components: the Open Search Description File Generator (known as “Search Connector on Windows 7) and Flickr web service. This was implemented using open standards of Open RSS and RSS2, making it easy for other developers to create their own search tie-ins as well. “Search Federation” enables the Windows 7 to search remote document repositories such as Flickr through the native Windows search interface. You can easily preview, set as a desktop background, print, send to and even edit your images.

Flickr Search Connector For Windows 7

Flickr Search Connector For Windows 7

You can search Flickr photos from everybody, yourself or a specific user. You can also access photos directly within the shell. This search connector is tested only in Windows 7 M3 build 6801, but supports all Windows 7 builds above 6801. If you want to know what makes searching within the shell cool, it means you are interacting directly with the file. It’s little clunky in the M3 build 6801, but even still you can double click a picture to open it in larger view or set it as your background. Preview pan in Windows 7 Explorer makes browsing quick and easy without pushing the back button.

It works entirely from the Windows 7 Taskbar. Once you launch the application, you will be prompted for your Gmail account information, after which you will see the unread count as an icon right on the taskbar button and hovering your mouse will show a preview of your unread email. Right clicking on the button uses Windows 7’s Jump Lists feature with quick and easy access to frequent tasks like opening your inbox or composing a new email message.

Gmail Notifier Plus supports multiple Gmail accounts and does its job brilliantly. It is designed to remain out of your way. The only Window that you are going to come across while using Gmail Notifier is the Configuration Window. Everything else is done directly from the taskbar.

Sensor

Sensor

Windows Sensor and Location Platform a new development platform from Microsoft facilitates the use of sensor, including location sensors like GPS devices in the Windows 7 operating system. It enables your computer to adapt to the current environment. With location sensor including GPS devices, WWAN radios, and even triangulation technology, your applications and gadgets can know exactly where they are, enabling them to provide more locally relevant content and functionality. Ambient light sensors can allow your computer to automatically adjust your screen’s brightness based on the current lighting conditions. They can also enable applications to optimize their content for readability making your computer more useful in range of operation environments than ever before.

Sensor and Location

Sensor and Location

The platform provides a standard way to integrate sensor and location devices into Windows, as well as a standard programming interface for applications to take advantage of these devices. The user has to control over how data from these devices is exposed to applications on Windows 7. This is a framework that tries to remove the old legacy of COM-ports for communication with external devices. Even a lot of today’s USB devices, still rely on the COM protocol to communicate with PC. The Location and Sensor Platform in Windows 7 improves this with a modern architecture for arbitrary hardware sensory input.
